Being in my final semester here at UVic I look back on years of hard work, and experience earned in a variety of fields. I've conducted research into data visualization, taught machine learning and electronics workshops, constructed a retro computing collection for UVic, and developed computer vision software for AUVs. But now, I get to take my next step into the workforce with research papers and a degree in hand. I am grateful for the opportunities afforded to me at UVic and I am excited to find my next challenge.

I am an associate professor and Canada Research Chair in Linguistic Information Visualization at the Ontario Tech University (Ontario Tech), where I lead a lab of 10 students at various levels of study. My research focus is interdisciplinary, combining information visualization and human-computer interaction with natural language processing to address the challenges of linguistic information management and the problems of information overload.

At the end of 2015, he was appointed director of the Institute of Software and Multimedia Technology.

Eric Donovan

Title

Eric Donovan is an Associate Professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Calgary. His research is on mass and energy transport in the near Earth plasma environment and involves observations of the aurora using ground- and space-based digital imagers. Eric holds a Tier II Canada Research Chair, and was recently awarded an NSERC Discovery Accelerator Supplement.

Nicole Dufournaud

My analyzes are based on computer methods. Since 1982, I work with advanced IT tools: at the World IT and Human Resource Center, I acquired a real IT culture, then, from 1996, a digital skill in text encoding with TEI (Text encoding initiative) . Since the early 2000s, I have been working in navigation and data exploration using exhaustive transcripts and counting tables. Social and kinship networks are tools that help make the women of the Old Regime visible.

Alex Endert

Title

As data continues to grow in size and complexity, how will interactive data analysis continue to create insights? My primary research interests address this challenge through combining techniques from visualization, human-computer interaction, statistics, machine learning, and data mining. My students and I invent novel user interaction techniques for people to explore data through visual analytic systems.

Eirini Goudarouli

Eirini is a member of the Research Team at The National Archives. Her current research interests include digital humanities and digital archives. She is particularly interested in bringing together methods and theories from a range of disciplines that could essentially contribute to the rethinking of digital, archival and collection-based research. She is also excited about new ideas around the collection, storage, and research of born-digital records.

William Ghali

Currently a professor in the Departments of Medicine and Community Health Sciences, Ghali’s new role will allow him to link together members in the Institute who have similar research interests and foster team initiatives. He also plans to take the Institute’s research and align it with provincial partners and decision makers as the research has direct applications.

Christian Frisson is a postdoctoral researcher, previously at the University of Calgary with the Interactions Lab and at Inria in France with the Mjolnir team. He obtained his PhD at the University of Mons, numediart Institute, in Belgium; and his MSc in “Art, Science, Technology” from Institut National Polytechnique de Grenoble with the Association for the Creation and Research on Expression Tools (ACROE), in France.

Tamara Flemisch

I started working at the Interactive Media Lab Dresden as a Research Associate in March 2019. As part of the DFG funded Collaborative Research Centre “Foundations of Perspicuous Software Systems”, I’m exploring new methods to interactively visualize models, information flows, and data of cyber-physical systems. In general, my research focuses on combining interaction with information visualization, especially multivariate graphs.

Kyle Hall

Kyle Hall is a PhD candidate in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Calgary under the supervision of Dr. Sheelagh Carpendale and Dr. Peter Kusalik. His research interests lie at the intersection of physical chemistry, simulations, and visualization. By combining these interests in novel ways, he advances both chemistry and visualization research. His current computer science research themes include visualizations of chemical simulations, the role of emphasis in visualization, and graphs.

My dissertation focused on social support in rare disease and common chronic illness communities. During my PhD, I completed internships at PARC, Microsoft Research, and Facebook.

My research in Human-Computer Interaction focuses on interactive tools and technologies that support creativity, innovation, and multi-disciplinary collaboration in domains such as interaction design, maker communities, sustainable product design and health care. I also explore interaction design theory and methodology— theoretical frameworks and techniques that allow computer scientists and interaction designers to understand and empathize with end-users, express and embody design ideas, and engage with collaborators beyond computing disciplines.
